#1 Mindset

An open mindset is the prerequisite of creativity and innovation.

If you are an open-minded person, you are welcome to new ideas and adaptive to multiple approaches in addressing the problem. You are receptive to criticism and not avoiding the clash of ideas or conflict.

Open-minded people can spot good things out of a bad situation. So they are confident and understand that setbacks aren’t signs of failure but an opportunity for learning and progressing.

Know what you want to accomplish in life. You need a goal to keep your focus or else you’d waste your time wandering around in life. So set your personal mission statement clear and detail.

It must be feasible and attainable as well.

Example of a mission statement: to humbly serve other people in a daily basis through friendship or if it is a company: giving up-to-date and accurate information of a property asset to buyer and seller while building the value of sharing skills and knowledge.

After defining a mission statement you can turn it into goals, outputs and action plans.


#3 Habits

It takes more than 2 months before a new behavior becomes automatic. Habit is a repetition of things that later becomes part of a character. Stephen R. Covey defines 3 personal powerful habits to be successful namely proactive attitudes, setting-up goals, and priorities.

Some successful entrepreneurs use daily strict schedule for their routine. Elon Musk plans his whole day activities into five minutes blocks. Ben Franklin conducts 13 weeks of self-improvement plans where he focuses on internalizing one virtue for each week.

Though old habits are harder to break, you can build new habits by disciplining yourself through a daily routine for body and spirit.


#4 Daily Meditation

We live in an age where everything is almost in a fast-paced mode from traffic in the road to frantic activities at the office. People forget how to pause and relaxed each day.

When you take several minutes in the day, afternoon or evening time for meditation, silence, or prayer, it calms your nerve and lets you reflect on the activity.

It causes you to slow down that you wouldn’t be in a hurry to make a decision or to act reactively.


#5 Read Books

As food for your body, reading is food for the mind. Great people in the world spend many hours reading books. Ask yourself what and how to read.

You don’t have enough time to read everything and you don’t need to know everything.

Be sure you read the book that most relevant to your case. If you are building personal financial freedom find some financial literature to help you develop a habit and practical steps.

Make your reading list in line with the priorities of your mission statement. 



#6 Develop Some Skills

Critical Thinking Skills

Don’t buy into all ideas or notions in the first place. Question the assumptions behind every idea. Is this market-target will buy the clothes at this price? Can I get a good-paid job in the next 4 years if I choose accountant major?

Reasoning by logic, not emotion. Do I need these clothes instead of are these clothes makes me look or feel good?

People make conclusions mostly according to emotional assumptions such as in impulsive buying.



World Economic Forum released a data of 5 demanded-hard-skills in 2019. They are cloud computing, artificial intelligence, analytical reasoning, people management, and UX (user experience) design. So which one is yours?

If yours aren’t on the list don’t worry. This flow of data in a big and fast-paced scale could support you with everything you need to know to develop your hard-skill and turn it into a profitable result.  


#7 Relations

How do you define relations in work, school or community? If a relation is only the matter of fulfilling or pursuing wealth possession or material need as its end-goal, you will even justify violence as a tool for your own goal.

If you see relations as a place where you can learn virtues from and serve each other, you could work in harmony without afraid of losing things or worrying about others achieving their desired goal.

Learning how to get along with people you dislike is difficult. But if you build your relationship upon right principles this could maintain your relationships. This includes sportsmanship, servanthood or work ethics.    


#8 Learn from Failure

Part of being successful is the willingness to accept and learn from failure. People make mistakes several times. It lets you devise a new way toward your goal.

What is the part that I fail at? Is this product design fit with my user’s ages or preferences? Can this article help me to define a new way toward success? Questions yourself.

Use step #6 on critical thinking skill so you have a clear view of the cause and effect of your case. The most important thing is that you don’t consider yourself a failure and try again.

#9 Have a Recreational Time

Our body has its limitations. Give yourself a break-day every week. It doesn’t have to be a luxurious or an expensive treat. Do an activity you rarely or almost never done during a week.

Sightseeing in nature or simply walking in the afternoon around your place. Work on your hobby. Reading your favorite book or modifying your motorbike or car. These activities mean to bring refreshment for your body and soul.

This moment allows you also to reflect and be grateful for the life you’ve experienced during a week. You also can discover the part of your weaknesses to deal with. This is a part of step #1 of being yourself.

Being successful is a matter of who you are becoming before and after you reach what you desire. These practical steps in this article are meant to help you become a successful person regardless of what or how much you have been achieving in life.
