Dear Parents: PLEASE DON’T PHP US!

I was their treasure, the apple of daddy’s eyes and mommy’s little princess. I am their center of the universe. Dad was a successful businessman and mom was a full time housewife.

Masa kecilku sangatlah nyaman, semua yang aku mau, pasti diberikan.

Like almost, literally everything. Mommy will buy me every toys or dolls for sure. If they don’t, all I need to do was whine or cry and boom, I will have it all. If I said I wanted to play with snow, next holiday I would be surrounded by it.

My parent loves to spoil me with expensive clothes even though I don’t understand about brands yet. Mom loves to play dress and mix-match with her. Later, she will post it on Instagram with cute caption. She loves to expos me to the world.

I went to an international pre-school where the tuition fee was almost the same with Jakarta’s minimum wage.

I knew my parents want me to get the best education they could give, even though they were trying too hard beyond their limit. It has to be the best.

On the other hand, this could feed their pride. My parents believe education is the best investment for me.

Back then when I try to recall, life was so easy and beautiful. I have my life jacket and safety net. Nothing bad will be happening to me, my parents will protect me. I am too precious to be hurt.

My plot twist came when dad got his critical illness. Dad had his insurance but not enough to cover the medical cost.

We need to sell the fixed assets where dad put all his money at. It takes time to sell them and the clock is ticking. Savings for my future education for college in UK was the next option to pay dad’s medical cost.

Mom was pretty sure that our fixed asset will be sold in short period of time, so everything will be fine.

Next thing I knew my dad passed away. Mom was grieving and I was too confused to accept the reality. Come to my surprises, dad has big debt that need to be paid off.

I learn it the hard way, the very hard way.

Dari semua yang telah aku lalui, andai bisa kembali ke masa lalu dan bertukar pikiran dengan orang tuaku, I would say:

  1. You don’t need to spoil me too much because it makes me weak; it makes me easy to give up and you guys kinda give me a false alarm on how my future was going to be, which apparently was not.
  2. The best investment was not the expensive school, tapi pelajaran mental bahwa aku harus bisa berjuang di kondisi apapun.
  4. If you insist that I have to be spoiled, tolong sekalian saja beri aku semua fasilitas.
